Review of A Room with a View (1986) by Peter L — 26 Dec 2009
A Merchant/Ivory masterpiece. This is a story that perhaps is not as heavy as Howard's End or The Remains of the Day, but it carries almost as much weight, and it certainly ranks up there with them.
Daniel Day-Lewis is funny and great, Maggie Smith is absolutely brilliant, and Helena Bonham Carter is lovely, and her transformation is subtle, and honest, and all the more beautiful because of it. Simon Callow and Denholm Elliott give us crucial and brilliant supporting roles, as they help to nurture Bonham-Carter and lead her to the happiness that she desires (her happiness would scarcely be possible without them, and yet they are able to play these roles without that heavy weight on their shoulders.
They're honest, and they for me almost represent the real emotional essence of the film). This film is simply brilliant. It's a joy to watch, it's funny, and it's desperately romantic.
