The movie is successfully able to show the conservative english society at the time of king edward. The character of Lucy Honeychurch grows through the movie from a girl trying to conform to the conservative society to one who realises her own free spirit.
but the love and passion between George Emerson and Lucy is lukewarm at best and seems to develop quite abruptly. The most enjoyable character in the movie is that of Cecil Vyse played by Daniel Day-Lewis.
Maggie Smith too is good in the role of the annoying elderly cousin.
