Review of A Room with a View (1986) by John-Mark B — 27 Apr 2010
It is seldom that a movie succeeds in carrying the spirit of a story beyond that of its original author. Forrester's original story is a much more reserved study, very much in a similar sense toward Where Angels Fear to Tread took the reader, albeit with very different themes. The only difference the script made to the original as I can recall was that of the character of MR. BEEBE, who was not at the last shown in the unfavorable light of disaproving toward the lovers union.
The film is shot with such beautiful stylization, the enchantingly fitting score of predominately Italian opera, and the choice of supremely talented actors seems to lift this story from the two dimensional page with which it had originally been hindered and projects the viewer into a world where they, if enjoyment is lacking, must appreciate its artistry.
