Review of A Quiet Place (2016) by T M — 31 May 2018
Don't believe the hype. The story is unconvincing and inconsistent throughout its 90 minutes and is loaded with unlikely events. It is annoyingly out of touch with its setting. In a world were people get chased and eaten by super-hearing monsters when they make the slightest sound, how do you think life would look like? People live underground and abandon everything that can make inadvertent noise? They move around heavily armed, try and fight the monsters maybe? You got it wrong.
People go on family trips, bear no arms, let infants play around ungarded, make babies, live in virtually normal homes (with convenient post-apocalyptic power supply), make noise, get attacked by the monsters, make more noise, get attacked again.
.. Seriously? While the underlying family story is credible, the thriller plot is lame and keeps you from enjoying the movie. I can recommend as a family drama (some good acting) with bonus ugly monsters.
Definitely not for thriller or scifi lovers though. There is nothing you haven't seen in other, more intelligent movies of the genre. Even the monsters' appearance goes back to the 70ies.
