Review of A Prairie Home Companion (2006) by Erika N — 20 Apr 2008
Maybe I'm too much of a stickler for good music, but were the characters supposed to be singing in harmony? Lily Tomlin was pretty bad, although Streep did a fair job. I think if they were too good, it would have ruined the genuineness and nuance of the show, but they nevertheless aren't that pleasing to listen to.
I wasn't a fan of the show so that definitely has a lot to do with me not really loving this film. About 1/4 of the way through, I was doubting whether or not I could make it through to the end, Then it got a little better.
None of the big name actors do a very good job singing, and the plot seems pretty drab...maybe the theme WAS no theme, but it seemed themeless, and sort of pointless, but I think that is part of the charm that Altman was trying to bring about.
Not an ultra BAD film, just not my style I guess. If you are a fan of the show, you'd probably like it.
