Review of A Prairie Home Companion (2006) by Zac H — 23 Jan 2009
First off, where is this movie supposed to sit in the video store. Is it a comedy? Is it a drama? Who knows?! I have only heard Garrison Keillor once or twice, and never committed to the two hour show.
Mostly, I sat there driving, in disbelief that the audience actually found this stuff funny. Now, I can't compare the movie to the radio broadcast but from the other stuff I've read, it appears there are a few things that carry over; such as Kevin Kline as Guy Noir.
And that's where they lose me. This movie is set in current day, however, this Guy Noir is some kind of 1930's and 40's gum-shoe. He's not playing a character in the radio broadcast, he's a real person.
So why is he dressed that way in modern times? It's possible I would have understood this movie better if I had listened to the radio version, but I haven't, and won't and because of that, I just can't recommend this movie.
