Review of A Place in the Sun (1951) by Daniel P — 14 Jul 2007
Great adaptation of a great book (Dreiser's "An American Tragedy"). They changed the movie and character names to disassociate from a previous adaptation that had flopped.
Shelley Winters in her breakthrough role - convincingly going from sweet girlfriend to panicked, stifling burden. Taylor shines as always (well, until she got old). Clift is a lot more sympathetic here than in the book. And he's so handsome. No wonder Liz was in love with him. Too bad he was a gay self-destructive drug addict who destroyed his looks, career and life (in that order).
