Review of A Place in the Sun (1951) by Grant M — 26 Jul 2008
A Place in the Sun is an odd mix of romance and film noir that manages to come together. Montgomery Clift, who is one of the most revered actors of the 50's, is very good without being great, playing his character as weak bult ultimately likeable.
The film however, belongs to its two leading women; Shelley Winters, as the factory worker who wants nothing more than a simple life with Clift is excellent and portrays neediness and yearning like only Winters can.
She cannot however compare to the immeasurable beauty of Liz Taylor who absolutely glows in this role and along with Cat on a Hot Tin Roof never looked better.
