Review of A Place Called Chiapas (1998) by Robert L — 22 Apr 2008
Good in that it is documented at all, but it could be so much more. Zapatismo is more than a self-interested movement, though it is primarily driven by economic reality. Part of what makes this particular struggle against neoliberalism unique is that they aligned themselves with other fronts in the global people's movement and formed a broad international coalition using the internet.
That is partly captured but the don't capture the literary aspect of Marcos's communiques at all, which to me is a major omission. I kind of wish someone like Naomi Klein had done this film instead of the one who did it.
She would have also done a better job of capturing how the power plays of free trade have force poor people into this difficult situation in which armed revolution is absolutely justified (especially when done as creatively and intelligently as the Zapatistas executed it.
).
