Review of A Perfect World (1993) by Daniel K — 19 Jun 2012
3: It's always puzzled me that Cahiers du Cinema rated this so highly (I recall seeing it on a Top 10 Films of the 1990's List), but they did have a thing for Eastwood. I'm curious if they still feel the same way.
A Perfect World is of quality, but it can't equal his more majestic achievements. My guess would be that if someone other than Costner had played the lead - not that I dislike Costner, but he isn't the greatest dramatic actor - it might have clicked better.
I would also guess that if he'd made this sometime in the last decade it would have outshone this earlier incarnation. Eastwood has simply developed as a storyteller, director, and composer in my opinion.
It's an engaging and introspective road film, but I don't love it, nor do I get particularly emotionally involved in it.
