Review of À Nous la Liberté (1931) by Benjamin S — 10 Dec 2010
A prisoner escapes from jail and becomes a successful industrialist, but then his past starts to catch up with him. Music is used very effectively in this film, to tell us what is happening.
"La liberte, c'est pour les heureux" ("Freedom is for the happy") sung by prisoners on an assembly line seemed almost sinister as it reminded me of slogans like "Arbeit macht frei", but as the film was made before WW2 that was presumably not the intention.
