Long before he won an Oscar for best screenplay, Brian Helgeland's first film credit was this awfully forgettable entry into the Nightmare on Elm Street series. The original and part three are both horror classics, but the fourth film really marked the downward slide for the series (until Craven took over for the final film).

Competent hack Renny Harlin had the directing duties this time around and doe so with workmanlike unoriginality. Robert Englund is Freddy, but unfortunately has a wisecrack overtime he appears on screen.

Outside of Englund, there are no real stars in the film outside of Linnea Quigley who's credited as "Soul from Freddy's Chest." There are some good specal effects (practical effects and not CGI, which is my preference) which does give the film some watchability, but it's weak stuff and certainly miles away from Helgeland's work on "Mystic River" or "L.

A. Confidential".
