Review of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987) by Thomas D — 10 Aug 2010
Dream Warriors was a some what watered down, milked edition to the Nightmare franchise. I will admit, when I think back to the 80's, I always think about Dream Warriors, Dream Master, basically any of the first few Freddy movies, Jason all of the slashers, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, E.
T. the list goes on to high hell. The fact is that 'Dream Warriors' is a good piece of slasher movie nostalgia so it gets a star or two. And I do appreciate it as a sequel to the first two nightmares as it does successfully link back up a few characters from the original such as Nancy and her dad.
Aside from this, the movie really doesn't have too much going for it acting wise which I can accept, given the fact that it is a slasher flick. The gore was there, especially Philip's death scene with all of the tendon's and nerve cords coming out of his wrists! That was wicked, twisted shit! I think the attempt to build strong characters of each member of Nancy's dream group ended up wasting too much time and ended up leaving more teens alive at the movies end then any other horror flick! Whats with that? Everybody needs to die in these movies! Well, it turns out that the survivors of Dream Warriors all die in the next movie: Dream Master! But the one person you wouldn't expect to die ends up dying, yep Nancy.
Freddy finally kills Nancy. So I guess overall it is an 'interesting' installment. But it starts to get a little bit too hokey toward the bizarre legend of Krueger. Instead of normal Elm Street teens this time though, Freddy is wasting kids that are locked up at the local nut house, Westin Hills (yeah the same Westin Hills in Freddy vs.
Jason). Anyways Nancy is a well known dream doctor who begins working at Westin Hills to help the kids their over come their 'dream demon'. Because she knows him better than anyone else due to the events of part 1.
While befriending Dr. Neil Gordon, who wants to help the kids also, they discover many secrets about Freddy that are not previously known in the legend. Such as the appearance of his mysterious Nun mother Sister Mary Helen aka: Amanda Krueger who was raped by one hundred maniacs while accidentally locked into one of the ward wings with all of the criminally insane killers.
Hence one of Freddy's nickname's: The son of a hundred maniacs. The special effects of the time were very nice and enlightening, but I think the overall film leans more toward fantasy and comic book elements instead of sticking with gritty, boiler room and blades horror like the first two movies, I think this is what tended to ruin it for me more than anything.
Freddy's murders start to become more fantasy such as the giant worm Freddy that tries to eat Kristen at the beginning and the infamous "Welcome to Prime time Bitch" death where Freddy slams a victim into a T.
V that he forms his head out of the top of. Pretty surreal but neat I guess. A creative twist of fantasy and horror, but less terrifying and horror'ish, less dark as part 1 and 2. Freddy part three gets three even stars, fair enough.
3.0 starz.
