Review of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987) by Scott C — 02 Feb 2013
I must continue my "Nightmare" reviews by mentioning what I believe is the second best installment in the series: "A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.".
There are so many returns in this movie that help make it memorable. First of all, Heather Langenkamp and John Saxon reprise their roles of Nancy and Donald Thompson from the original "Nightmare." Their characters, including how their lives were affected by the events of the first "Nightmare" are excuted beautifully.
But the best return to this film comes in the script, co-written by "Nightmare" creator Wes Craven. Craven takes what we know about the "Nightmare" series and Freddy Krueger to the next level, giving audiences a deeper look into Krueger's origin, as well as more reason to be terrified of him.
Add the new characters to the mix - troubled teenagers who are so terrified by their nightmares that they have been admitted into a mental hospital - and this film gives us an hour-and-a-half-long glimpse at exactly how devastating it can be to meet Freddy Krueger.
This film is a wonderful addition to the "Nightmare" series and the story of Freddy Krueger. Sure, there is some cheesy '80s fluff. But once you get past that and get to the heart of the film, it proves nothing short of yet another masterpiece.
