Review of A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) by Zachary I — 12 Oct 2013
2010 might have been the worst year for film remakes. The first was the remake of the Wolfman, the second was the remake of Clash of the Titans, and the third was the remake of my fourth favorite horror movie of all time, A Nightmare on Elm Street.
The remake marked the first time in the series where Freddy Krueger wasn't played by Robert Englund which is sad because he is Freddy Krueger and no one will ever top him. In this movie, Jackie Earle Haley plays Freddy Krueger.
A Nightmare on Elm Street stars Jackie Earle Haley, Rooney Mara, Kyle Gallner, Katie Cassidy, and Thomas Dekker and the movie is directed by Samuel Bayer who directed music videos for musicians like Blink 182, Linkin Park, Green Day, Sheryl Crowe, and Garbage.
The story of the movie is very similar to the original expect for a few differences. For one, Freddy is a child molester in the remake instead of a child killer like in the original. Also, the characters have different names.
Nancy's last name in the remake is Holbrook instead of Thompson and Tina's name here is now Kris. However, the remake has bad acting, mediocre dialogue, and no tension and suspense. The remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street is the second worst remake I've ever seen and the third worst movie of 2010.
The acting in the movie is bad. Rooney Mara plays Nancy and she makes the character of Nancy so uninteresting and boring. Kyle Gallner plays Johnny Depp's character in the movie and he looks like he's about to cry.
Katie Cassidy from the Hills surprisingly is the only interesting character in the whole movie and she did a decent job. The best part about this movie is Freddy Krueger played by Jackie Earle Haley. Jackie Earle Haley was a great Freddy Krueger.
He acted like Freddy, he moved like Freddy, and sounded like Freddy. However, the makeup on him was awful. He looks like one of the Navi from Avatar if you set it on fire. A big plothole in the movie is the main characters don't remember being molested by Freddy in preschool.
How do you forget something like that? I don't care how old you are that's something you don't forget easily. The movie has so many flaws with it and I can say that this movie is easily worse than Freddy's Dead.
One problem I have is the acting. The actors do bad jobs with the two exceptions being Katie Cassidy and Jackie Earle Haley. Another problem I have is the special effects in the movie. The wall scene in the original was a creepy scene with great effects and here it's all CGI and it looks horrendous.
Another problem I have with the movie is that there is no scares whatsoever. All the scares you get are stupid jumpscares and it's not scary at all and it's just lazy. I also hate the kills in the movie.
The scene where Kris dies is like Tina's death in the original, but it's not like the original. Tina's death was creepy and scary because she was being slashed while being dragged on the wall.
In the remake, she's thrown all over the place like in a cartoon and it's not scary. Another problem I have is that none of the teens in this movie remember being molested by Freddy like I said earlier.
I also hate Freddy's makeup and he looks like a Navi from Avatar if you set it on fire. My biggest problem with this god awful mess of a film is that it's not scary at all. The original was scary because it had scary dream sequences, a scary villain, and it had memorable characters and writing.
This movie is not scary, has boring characters, mediocre writing, and Freddy is not scary. Freddy in the original film was scary because he was a demon who tormented people in ttheir dreams and he was scary.
Freddy in this movie is not scary at all although I like how he's serious in this movie, but like I said he's not scary. There are only three good things I can say about this movie. One is Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy Krueger like I said earlier.
The second thing I liked was Katie Cassidy as Kris. She was the only enjoyable protagonist in the movie and they set her up to be the main protagonist and then they kill her off. The final thing I enjoyed about this movie was the ending scene.
I will admit that the ending was cool and some of the imagery was cool, but either than that this remake is a mess of a film and the worst Nightmare film to date. This is what happens when you let Michael Bay touch a horror movie franchise we all love.
He has destroyed Transformers, Friday the 13th, and A Nightmare on Elm Street. I recently heard that he is going to remake The Birds as well. Michael Bay needs to get out of Hollywood right now. I am going to give this movie half a star (The half a star rating doesn't post to my Facebook page) just for Jackie Earle Haley, Katie Cassidy, and the ending.
Either than that, stay away from this movie and don't even rent the movie from Redbox.
