Review of A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) by Jeremy M — 24 Sep 2012
The few slasher movies that actually turned out to be good had a certain formula to them. The subject matter was dark and twisted, but there was enough style and quirkiness to offset the unsettling feelings associated with the basic storyline, creating memorable horror film moments along the way.
This recent batch of horror film remakes and reboots only take the former element into consideration, re-creating horrifyingly sickening plot lines mixed with an even darker tone. It doesn't sit well, giving this film a very small amount of redeemable qualities.
Seriously, there's nothing memorable nor creative here, and it proves that if Robert Englund isn't the one sporting those iconic razor blade gloves, then it's just not the same. Rooney Mara shows a skillful acting side to her that promises good things to come (which has recently come to fruition), but otherwise the supporting cast is bland, failing to create any sort of emotional connection before they are all butchered in their dreams.
Stick with the original version and you'll be much more satisfied.
