Review of A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) by Michelle H — 06 Jul 2013
This is the first horror film I remember seeing as a child and it scared the hell out of me! The whole idea of a evil spirit man killing kids in their sleep with razor sharp claws on his hand is a brilliant and terrifying concept.
The film does really well in spite of the low budget, with lots of simple, but effective tricks and smoke and mirror effects. Nacey is a awesome teenage hero with the heart of a lion. She challenges freddy both in dreams and by bringing him into our reality.
Freddy is more demonic and scary in this first film, not at all campy as he is in the following films. He is always a shadowy figure who never fully reveals himself. You experience the terror through his victims eyes as he toys with them, chases them down, and brutally kills them.
Nightmare On Elm Street is a timeless classic that always gives me the shivers every time I watch it!
