Review of A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) by Johnathon W — 05 Nov 2017
Classic horror film that remains the scariest of the franchise, if not one of the scariest movies ever made. The cast is solid across the board, with Heather Langenkamp excellent as Nancy, giving her a girl next door appeal, while Johnny Depp makes a solid debut in his first film role.
The scene stealer, though, is Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger, who instantly makes his character a classic with his intelligence & wit. He's not your normal monster, as he will torment you before finally killing you, making it that much scarier when he shows up.
Behind the camera, Wes Craven crafts a great new monster with an interesting dimension in that Freddy can only get you in your dreams. It's a brilliant device, especially since the audience knows we all must sleep eventually, plus Craven effectively tricks you in not letting you know if a character is dreaming or not.
Even the visual effects have aged well, for the most part, and Freddy's make-up is one of the most iconic looks in horror. A true horror classic and a standard to this day.
