Review of A Night to Remember (1958) by Noel V — 02 Jun 2010
This is so much better than James Cameron's overblown love story it's not even funny. Multi-charactered, multi-narrative movie that hurtles quietly and self-effacingly to its fate, so low-budget it incorporates footage from silent films.
The focus here is on the event in all its complexity. Which doesn't mean it's all about the ship and not the passengers--we have a nuanced view of both the lower and higher classes, something you don't get in Cameron's simpleminded version.
With crisp black-and-white images, and a depiction of the ship that seems all the more beautiful, all the more haunting for the lack of color and CGI effects (and taking a blessed hour less to tell its far more truthfully detailed story), this is the definitive film on the Titanic.
