Review of A Night to Remember (1958) by Alexander P — 09 Sep 2012
The James Cameron Titanic has its moments, but for my money this is the best version of the fateful sinking of the "unsinkable" liner.
Director Roy Ward Baker doesnt spend a hour and a half with all the pre siniking bobbins he cuts to the chase thirty minutes in and then the film becomes a classic British stiff upper lip tale of heros and villians.
As this is a Rank Studios production we get Kenneth Moore as our hero who keeps order in the face of mounting panic.
The sinking itself is very well handled which depsite the fact the film was made in 1958 is quite suprising.
One word about the Criterion disc realease of this film, its beautiful with a brilliant restoration blown uo into a widescreen wonder that adds a real mark of quality to an already excellent film.
