Review of A Night in Heaven (1983) by Jake C — 17 Oct 2018
On the one hand, director John G. Avildsen is best known for directing intimate character studies that champion zero-heroes, loser subjects who transcend their abandonment to achieve some inner greatness-think here of the titular characters in JOE, ROCKY, and THE KARATE KID.
On the other hand, screenwriter Joan Tewkesbury is best known for being the pen behind the ensemble piece NASHVILLE, which centered no single character and followed no particular heroic arc. The combination of these opposed narrative approaches here makes for a disaster, a dismal project that never adds up or pays off apart from the enjoyment of watching a train wreck.
