Review of A Night at the Opera (1935) by Mark P — 13 Sep 2008
This was on telly yesterday and I actually got to watch it. Groucho is in top form and it was nice to see a few quid spent on it. Certainly one of their best, but I only give it four as the romantic leads take up way too much time and it begins the process whereby the Brothers have to pay more and more deference to the story, whereas in previous films they ignored the story.
The man to blame for that is Irving Thalberg of MGM, this was their first MGM film and good though it is, represents the begining of their decline. Their best movies were with pre-Code and with Paramount.
