Review of A Night at the Opera (1935) by Jack G — 18 Mar 2009
Duck Soup might be the "better" film, and overall crazier, but this is the better crowdpleaser, one of the ones that if it doesn't keep your sides splitting like a spastic teddy bear then it features some amazing production numbers and even Harpo playing the Harp. If nothing else, and there's a lot else, the scene where people keep crowding and crowding into the room on the boat is about as perfect a scene of film comedy as imaginable.
Line to remember: "You're willing to pay him a thousand dollars a night just for singing? Why, you can get a phonograph record of Minnie the Moocher for 75 cents. And for a buck and a quarter, you can get Minnie.".
