Review of A Night at the Opera (1935) by Matt D — 19 Mar 2009
I waited for a bit to review this movie, because even though I liked it I liked it significantly less than the other Marx Brothers classics. After reading up on the film I discovered what the problem was; it had been slightly toned down.
When the Marx Brothers left Paramount to go to MGM, they were told by MGM head Irving Thalberg they needed to not be as anarchaic as their previous films and appear more friendly and helpful; they are still hilarious and comedically brilliant in this film, but there edginess and daring, and general love of chaos is not as strong here as the previous films.
But it is still a lot of fun to watch; the bed sequence in particular was a piece of genius comic choreography.
