Review of A Night at the Opera (1935) by Adam C — 04 Dec 2009
Many may say this is the best Marx Brothers film, I would have to go with the chaotic brilliance of Duck Soup. Still on re-watching it it is filled to the brim with great bits and one liners. It moves at a good pace as well.
The only thing slowing it down to me is some of the musical number go on a bit too long. The film tough marks a change from the early films of the Marx's. this was there first MGM film and there style changed a little.
The film has much more focus and a stronger story then there early films, which works well for the film. When it comes down to it the film is a classic and nearly all the gags are legendary. The stateroom scene and the sanity clause scenes are just amazing.
Also this film maybe has the best ending in any comedy, with a wild conclusion of the Marx's ruining an opera. A gem of a film.
