Review of A Night at the Opera (1935) by Sean H — 18 Apr 2010
I find it kind of daring that amongst all the zany and wacky stuff going on in the Marx Bros. movies, they manage to fit in a 5 to 10 minute segement of them just chillin', playing the piano and harp. To put it into perspective, it would be like, after having a rather enjoyable laugh at seeing Bill Murray getting slimed by the aptly named Slimer, instead of the Ghostbusters heading on down to the Ballroom to take care of buisness, they instead sort of duck on down to the Hotel Bar where Harold Ramis proceeds to tear it up on the piano and immediately following that, Ernie Hudson performs an even more amazing number on the giant harp that for some reason is in the hotel bar. After a good while of this, a random hotel patron walks into the bar, covered in ghostly slime. At this time the Ghostbusters would sort of all look at each other with that, "Oh shit! Would should bustin' ghosts, not playing muscial insturments!" look on their faces.
Don't get me wrong. I love the muscial bits to all their films. I just really have the utmost respect for these guys to sort of bring their comedy routine to a screeching halt so they can instead just fiddle around and put on a concert. Also this movie is immensely hilarious. The scene where Chico describes how they got across the ocean, a wonder of a scene to behold.
