Review of A Night at the Opera (1935) by Steve S — 22 Apr 2011
***1/2 (out of four).
Though not quite up there with "Duck Soup" or "Horse Feathers", "A Night at the Opera" is certainly the best the Marx Brothers films that featured them as a trio rather than a foursome.
The three brothers stowe away on a ship with an aspiring opera singer to New York City where they take over the Met with their unique brand of lunacy.
There are tons of gags and fast one-liners that include some of their best like an overstuffed shipn cabin that gets more crowded and more crowded. Alan Jones takes over the role that would have gone to Zeppo. He does a fine job, but the dynamic isn't quite good.
