Review of A New Leaf (1971) by Paul J — 02 Apr 2015
This is writer-director Elaine May's first film and it is a delightful and oddly original comedy. Hollywood noticed her and they've consistently asked for her help. From Mike Nichols to Sydney Pollack (she doctored Tootsie), she's one of comedies best kept secrets.
Walter Matthau is hysterical throughout this picture and May herself also stars as a clumsy and naive young woman. Her absurdity is so endearing and by the end we adore her. Clearly, so does Matthau. (I also wouldn't be surprised if Woody Allen took notice of May's talents.
They have very similar comedic timing). Despite the film's cynicism, in the end, we're left with a extremely touching sentiment.
