Review of A Most Wanted Man (2014) by Donovan M — 09 Aug 2014
#AMostWantedMan is more slow motion than it is slow burn thriller. From the writer of 'Tinker Taylor Solider Spy' #JohnleCarre lights a firecracker with a fifty foot fuse and leaves #PhilipSeymourHoffman to watch it burn.
All the while we're left watching Hoffman watching the fuse. Get the picture. You do get a distraction from the non-action by watching #RachelMcAdams. Her acting is good and let's face it, who doesn't want to watch Rachel McAdams for two hours.
#WillemDafoe also get a pass on the acting but to be honest I couldn't help but think about his role as the Green Goblin, because every thriller should give you time to think about other stuff. As for #RobinWright, who hires her and only give her ten minutes of combine screen time? That's a complete waste of money, good talent, and completely crushes my hopes and dreams.
The fault lies with the story itself. Whereas Hollywood would have wrapped it up in fifteen minutes and moved on, this movie dragged it out for two hours. Who does this egregious affront to good talent? The Britts do, that's who.
Their idea of boiling water is to put a pot on the stove and turn the burner on simmer. I'm use to us Yanks cranking the fire up high and letting the pot boil over. The director should have cut the fuse down to a half an inch and stuck into a quarter stick of dynamite.
If someone's hand gets blown off in the process, all the better. As it stands, the only thing that explodes in this movie is Hoffman's character but that's at the end after he sees that the firecracker bang is more like a pop.
I wanted to scream also. So grab the bag of popcorn out of the microwave and watch 'A Most Wanted Man' on a cold Sunday afternoon in February after football season is over. 'Cause you're not missing anything but Philip Seymour Hoffman.
And after seeing this movie, now is a good time to miss Philip Seymour Hoffman.
