Review of A Most Wanted Man (2014) by Erin L — 16 Aug 2014
This is a very engaging movie. An illegal Chechen/Russian emigre enters Hamburg. Why is he here? Is he a terrorist looking to carry out a mission? Or, is he here for some other reason? The German spy network is aware of him early on. Principally he is tracked by Guenther (Phillip Hoffman). Hoffman is masterful in this role. The success of the film rides upon his capable shoulders. A sympathetic lawyer, Annabel (Rachel McAdams), agrees to help the emigre, Issa. Ms Adams is very good. The American spy network also becomes interested in Issa. They are depicted via Martha (Robin Wright). Ms Wright is capable.
The story unfolds in an interesting manner. There is lots of intrigue. There are many twists and turns. The movie keeps us guessing. I was unable to foresee the ending.
Hoffman's death is a great loss. His fondness for recreational drugs proved his undoing; just like tens of thousands of others over the years. It reminds me of the Siren songs of Homer's Odyssey. It's hard to understand.
It was a good trip to the flics.
