Review of A Most Wanted Man (2014) by Nathan M — 15 Nov 2014
An incredible sense of tone and style, director Anton Corbijn honors John Le Carre's novels by making a spy thriller that isn't about flash, but is more about the shadowy politics involved. This was a wonderful send off for Philip Seymour Hoffman, and I'm glad this is his last performance. It's not his best, but it certainly encapsulates everything that was so great about his career. He is perfectly subtle and quiet in his performance, but you can feel the fury behind his eyes and his whispers. McAdams is also perfectly cast in this, and she is a performer who doesn't get enough credit. With Robin Wright and Willem Dafoe in your supporting cast, you know this film is really strong.
It might be a little too slow for some viewers, but it definitely fits in with the other great spy thrillers like Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.
