Review of A Most Wanted Man (2014) by Michael H — 27 Aug 2014
A studied, deliberate - and, unfortunately, often cliched and ordinary - espionage tradecraft movie. Hoffman's performance is remarkable because it's so unlike any other character he's played. I kept looking for recognizable Hoffmanesque manerisms and nuances to 'catch him out.' There were a couple; but only a couple and very tiny and brief.
The other performances are all top level professional work though not as compelling because we aren't as focused on them and don't know how far they depart from those actors' usual bag of tricks.
The movie takes off rather unexpectedly at the end and Hofman's character displays some new and powerful responses in contrast to his previously tightly controlled behavior.
