Review of A Most Wanted Man (2014) by Tony G — 13 Dec 2014
The filmmaking lets the source material down. This should-have-been absorbing story is bogged down by some poor casting and directing choices.
McAdams is quite out of her league against the likes of Hoffman and Wright, but even Dafoe doesn't seem to know how to play his character well tonally. Hoffmann's commitment to his character is so intense that it dwarfs his fellow cast and only in scenes he shares with Wright and Nina Hoss does the film simmer.
But the biggest issue with "A Most Wanted Man" is the personification of the titular character. He's such a sad sack, mopey presence that there's no real mystery or threat to his identity. We are meant to, at first, wonder about his honesty but the mystery is not there.
Lots of potential but disappointing pay off.
