Review of A Monster Calls (2016) by Martin W — 02 Jan 2017
3 stars. Liam Neeson voices a monster who helps a bullied boy cope with his mother's terminal illness. There are times this film feels like it could of been a Guillermo del Toro film, not surprising form the the director of The Orphanage J.
A. Bayona. Also a film like this stands or falls if you find the kid likeable, fortunately Lewis MacDougall who plays Conor is that. Fantasy and reality collide in this entertaining tell. The effects look good, but I personally enjoyed the animation watercolour sequences.
Worth a watch, though a slightly painful ending, you've been warned.
