Review of A Monster Calls (2016) by Julie L — 07 Jan 2017
Brutal beautiful movie magic. I remember when A Field of Dreams stretched my mind for a couple of hours with its somewhat fantastical world on top of an ordinary one. J.A. Bayona (director) ,Peter Ness (screenwriter) and team create a unique cinema experience.
The stories told by the tree monster are absolutely beautiful watercolor animations. These link the character of the boy and his mother. This movie belongs to the teen Cononr played by Lewis MacDougall .
The Christmas Carol like rhythm and structure of three tales told by the monster leads us to a forth tale told by the boy that is an unflinching truth for him. Emotionally it wrings us out and leaves us in a heap on the floor of the theater.
