Review of A Monster Calls (2016) by Elaine M — 08 Jan 2017
My husband and I went to see this movie with our 12 year old daughter. We all enjoyed the movie. Lewis was simply fantastic in his role, incredible acting especially when you learn that he lost his own mother in 2013.
Well done Lewis! I do feel that the film will appeal more to those children who can relate to the character Lewis played, who feel a sense of being different. It is wonderful when you grow up feeling different to watch a film like this and relate to the character and how they have built up safety mechanisms in their head to allow them to cope with feeling different.
It is my feeling that much of this movie will go over the head of the average child - the ones portrayed in the film as the bullies, who have little understanding of what causes other children to feel different.
To these children the film could well be dark because it is beyond their imagination and it is likely they simply won't understand the thought process of the film. If you have a deep thinking child who feels different, then I am sure it will be a winner for them.
