Review of A Monster Calls (2016) by Deandre W — 10 Jan 2017
"This story is about a boy too young to be a man, and too old to be a kid". Visionary director J.A. Bayona and a talented crew of animators bring to life "A Monster Calls", based off of the novel of the same name by Patrick Ness.
Liam Neeson lends his voice as The Monster, who is called upon by young Connor O'Malley to help cure his cancer riddled mother played by Felicity Jones, but before he can do so he must tell Connor three stories and after the three stories are told, Connor must tell of a story of his own.
"A Monster Calls" beautifully tells its own story about a kid coming to grips with his mother's inevitable death. Lewis MacDougall shines bright as Connor O'Malley, perfectly playing a boy tormented by his emotions, Liam Neeson provides top notch voice work, delivering both sternness and tenderness as The Monster.
"A Monster Calls" is a remarkable film to start off your 2017, a film with heart, hope, and an interesting take on our perception of morality.
