Review of A Monster Calls (2016) by Adam T — 13 Jan 2017
J. A. Bayona's 'A Monster Calls' (2016) is a visually stunning film with a strong emotional hold, just a shame that the script is a bit too Americanised for a UK set drama. The performances from its cast are strong, especially from its young lead Lewis MacDougall, who provides an emotionally mature performance.
My problems with the script are the same problems I have with Patrick Ness' scripts for his 'Doctor Who' (1963 to present) spin-off, 'Class' (2016). Dialogue isn't particularly memorable and most of the characters speak solely in moral lessons, which have little British flair.
Honestly though, 'A Monster Calls' is good, just not great in my opinion due to the highlighted script issues.
