Review of A Monster Calls (2016) by Daniel B — 13 Jan 2017
Very close to a 4 1/2. So lucky I got to go to a early screening for this followed by a Q&A with the director, J.A. Bayona. So blown away. Sadly I haven't read the book, so not sure how close the movie is.
But loved this movie. I will start with the negative, really the only thing I didn't like was the pacing. Felt it was slow in the beginning & hard to get into a bit. After that, maaaaaaan. Such a punch of emotions.
Loved sharing this movie with a packed theater cause you could feel everyone paying complete attention & could hear everyone sniffling lol. I cried of course. This was very visually beautiful. Loved the animation.
Perfect. Beautiful sets & locations. Great visual effects (better get some Oscar nominations). The acting was great. The kid, Lewis MacDougall But really everyone was perfect. The music worked so well, especially the parts where they didn't use music at all.
This was a story about dealing with loss. Using the fantasy world to deal with real life. Definitely why it clicked with me so well. Whenever I am going through anything tough I always turn to my movies & books.
A Blu Ray must own for me! A stand out movie of the year in my opinion.
