Review of A Monster Calls (2016) by David A — 29 Jan 2017
A Monster Calls, despite being part fairy tale, realistically and humanely explores the deep themes of loss and grief and letting go. With a gritty honesty, Patrick Ness (as screenwriter) adapts his novel under JA Bayona's direction to deliver a truly emotive and humanistic portrayal of a young boy learning to accept his mother's imminent death -helped in no small terms by a sparkling cast that sells every emotion as genuine.
Heartbreaking yet life-affirming.
