It's a sobering experience to be immersed in a movie that emotionally ruins you. A Monster Calls tells a harshly genuine message about the pain of inevitability, the complexities of denial, and the virtues of childhood fantasies - all of which are delivered beautifully using dreamlike animations and strong performances throughout.
The film does a perfect job addressing those difficult themes in an impactful way, driven mainly by the seamless tonal balance between its dark subject matter and fantastical elements.
