Review of A Monster Calls (2016) by Patrick L — 14 Jun 2017
Okay, yes, there is a slow start, and yes, it deals with some heavy themes, but the special effects...the art style....WHAT??? It's so unique and so well-done. The stories the Monster tells are the heart of this film, while the story between Conor and his ill mother played by Felicity Jones is the soul. My nitpicks include it being hard to sometimes catch all the dialogue, and grim this movie oftentimes was, but the certain dilemmas that are presented and how the movie deals with it...it was quite refreshing. Sometimes you could tell Lewis MacDougall as the young star Conor was not always 100 percent in the zone, but those parts are more than forgivable because he has some parts that are borderline mind-blowing.
I've waited six months for A Monster Calls, and I was not disappointed. Far from it.
A Monster Calls, my friends, is Ownable. Had it come out in 2016 like it was supposed to, I likely would've placed it somewhere between 8th and 11th. It's a powerful, effective, heart-wrenching movie with some of the most mature themes I've seen in not just young adult films, but most films really.
