Review of A Monster Calls (2016) by Richard S — 16 Oct 2017
A Monster Calls is an adaptation of Patrick Ness' superb novel based upon an idea by Siobhan Dowd. Patrick Ness was also given screenplay writing duties which means it's a spot on adaptation. The director who I previously knew from The Orphanage and The Impossible has brought it to the screen with stunning visual flair, the monster of the story looks superb as do the animated tales that the monster relays to the boy.
It's probably one of the closest book adaptations I have ever seen, I loved the book and this is a perfect adaptation and just like the book, the final scenes still have the biggest emotional gut punch you'll experience.
Beautiful film.
