Review of A Million Ways to Die in the West (2014) by Eli H — 14 Nov 2014
The movie suffers from a few glaring flaws, the first and most obvious being that the movie is just to long. The two hour run time (and three minute lead in with nothing but establishing shots of the area) of this movie feels like it definitely could have been an hour to an hour and a half and been much better.
Seth McFarlane tries to use the same structure for his movie that he uses for Family Guy which, unfortunately, often throws off the timing of otherwise funny jokes. The other problem is that the movie tries far too hard to be the next Blazing Saddles.
Everything from Neil Patrick Harris' out of place song and dance number to bulls running through random places they shouldn't be are recycled jokes from Mel Brooks' classic. Having said all that this movie did have its moments of being truly funny and McFarlane is a really good comedian and does shine in portions of the movie, but it suffers from his awful direction.
I'd be willing to give him another shot but if Ted 2 is bad that's probably the end of him as a film director.
