Review of A Million Ways to Die in the West (2014) by Holden M — 10 May 2015
It comes as a significant disappointment that Seth MacFarlane has produced a film which he really doesn't seem to be trying very hard. Previous MacFarlane comedy from Family Guy, American Dad and Ted proved just how sharp his eye is for edgy comedy.
But A Million Ways to Die in the West feels extremely bland, slightly empty, with too many crass and unfunny jokes compared to a few irreverent laughs. It feels like some of the plot points and humour were made up on the spot, as though people were desperate to fill up some more time between key story boards.
It's not awful, but for MacFarlane's standards, it anchors itself way too far from the edginess we expect from him.
