Review of A Man for All Seasons (1966) by Giffy G — 01 Feb 2009
I was surprised how much I liked this movie. The basic conflict within the movie--divorce and Protestantism--is so tame in my world view that it struck me as bizarre, even with my all knowledge about the time period, that the issue was worth dying over.
The acting was superb, impeccable, flawless... I don't have an adjective strong enough. Wendy Hiller was robbed of an Oscar. I think it's a bigger snub than Citizen Kane. Seriously. The soundtrack also struck me as amazing: ambient sounds, the music choices, echoes.
I was listening on my laptop with headphones, and the soundtrack was amazing; I can only imagine how stunning it would have been in a theater. I also want to thank this movie from the bottom of my heart for doing what so few movies of epic scale do: resisting the urge to be 3 hours long.
At a svelte 2 hours, this movie kept my attention without having to beat me about the head with its epicness. Sadly, this movie did take itself WAY too seriously, but apart from that, this was a consumate movie.
