Review of A Love Song for Bobby Long (2004) by Andrew M — 19 Oct 2007
Touching, sort of, but it lacked something that would make it great. What that is, I can't say. The film's portrayal of it's setting is great, but it does little to un-romanticize the New Orlean's that the films character's lament as romanticized.
Bobby Long is somewhat cliched idea, The drunk disgraced writer is nothing new. Travolta plays him well though, drawing sympathy, but not more than the character deserves. Johansson and Macht, are good, but nothing special. The film's greatest character is its location, and it hurts, because though treated well, its not exploited enough. Gabel spent too much time inside an old house and a bar. What her film needed was more room to breath.
