Review of A Love Song for Bobby Long (2004) by Ricardo V — 12 Mar 2008
It's a rule in my life that every film that ever stars Scarlett Johan. must get at least three and a half stars. it's biased but it's fair (at least in my admiring mind). from all her films this stands as one of the most complete and satisfying.
though the story isn't the most original and the big surprise at the end of the film seems kinda corny, it's the strong acting of johansson as an angry youth and especially john travolta who believe it or not can actually act when he's not on a battlefield earth.
he has great charisma and has shown it in films like 'pulp fiction', 'get shorty', and of course, 'saturday night fever'. his performance here as a drunkard is not quite on par with the other films I mentioned, but it is still very much worth mentioning.
the music that accompanies this movie, due to its setting in the south, is one of it's strongest points. the way it is shot with some gloominess here and there adds to the affect of the film. it is very much worth a rent for the sake of renting something on a boring friday.
