Review of A Love Song for Bobby Long (2004) by Luca V — 02 Aug 2008

There is this girl who eats junk food: M and M s, peanut butter etc., lying in her dirty sofa, when her flea-ridden boyfriend tells her that her mother died.

She is angry with him cause he has forgotten to tell her this before the funeral. Then she leaves the M M s home to go to New Orleans, to find her mother s grave, her mother s home. She finds a surprise in this home: Two Men, none is sober.

There is this Bobby Long (a bleached haired John Travolta), and another guy, who is the biographer of Bobby.

I don t understand why it takes the entire film to Bobby Long to find his death. I mean, he is full of alcohol, always full. He his an overflowing cup of alcohol, but he smokes too. So if one smokes, he fires himself, I mean you light a fire, when you light your cigarette near a drum full of alcohol.

But this is not the case of our Bobby. Before dying he has the time to teach Scarlett (don t ask me to tell you the name of her character because is the name of an impossible flower) lot of interesting things. For example he convinces her to go school and get a Diploma.

Another good thing of the story is the redemption of B Long biographer who in the final is completely free from alcohol, he drinks just mineral water and some Dr Pepper. aha.

Question: why a person cannot be enthusiastic of Life without drinking so much?

Is it life what colonel Kurtz called the Horror?

My anwer is: No, alcohol makes life simpler, then you wake up with a headache, and with damaged kidney.

I think the core of the business is: facing the world, facing the pain without any help, just you and the pain, just your clear, beer free body and mind and the danger of the world. If you fight and win you are a great Man.

There are sensitive people who canâ??t make it like that. Bobby Long is one of them: sweet and clever. Family Lover and (ex) Promiscuous. Poet and Alcoholic.

Apart from all this philosophy I did not like this film so much, I mean the story is good, and also there is this slow rhythm that, yeah it is good for an European who does not like all this run baby run, the sort of Speed, Terminator, Matrix. But there is something that I donâ??t like. For instance the houses: Wood houses painted blue.
