I didn't know much about A Long Way Down going into it, other than the fact that it was about suicide. This is not the most attractive premise, but I was pleasantly surprised with what I found. One of the things I find the worst things a film can be, in my opinion, is schmaltzy.
Happy, preachy sentimentality is a big no no, and can easily ruin a film. Even though it would've been easy for A Long Way Down to fall into that trap, it manages to avoid ever coming across like that.
Instead, I just found myself smiling.
